I caught myself doing it in a design review last month. A teammate walked through a proposed state machine and I automatically responded: “Before we lock the transition rules—what’s the failure mode that would keep you up at night?” He paused, blinked, and said, “That’s… actually a really good question.” It landed cleanly. It also made me realize how much of my internal monologue now speaks the language of prompts.

My days are spent observing this pattern across many engineers who live with AI agents daily. People develop a distinctive way of speaking—a rhythm of inquiry, a suite of mannerisms—that works when the other party lacks lived experience, intuition, or shared context. These mannerisms don’t always translate cleanly back to human conversation. Sometimes they improve collaboration. Sometimes they make the speaker sound like they’re auditing a dinner reservation.

This isn’t unique. Anyone who lives deeply with AI agents picks up their own dialect, their own rituals, their own metacognitive tics. These are the soft skills of AI-native collaboration—showing up in how we type, how we structure our thinking, even how we pause before asking a question. And weirdly, a lot of them make you better at working with actual humans too.

Spillover

This phenomenon is sometimes called spillover or transfer — the habits and mannerisms developed for one domain (prompting an AI) start appearing in another (talking to humans). It’s not deliberate. It’s just that the practice reshapes how you frame questions, when you pause, and how you structure information.

It shows up in small ways: mentally tagging colleagues’ contributions during a meeting using the same shorthand used for prompts, or structuring a stakeholder brief with the same explicit constraints and success criteria used in a good prompt. The practices don’t stay contained to the AI conversation. Once the pattern is recognized, it starts appearing in interactions with people too.

The Observable Mannerisms

The obvious stuff is easiest to spot. Engineers who live with AI daily develop the habit of typing certain words in ALL CAPS when they want the agent to treat them as emphasis, constraint, or instruction priority. “This MUST NOT introduce new dependencies.” “The solution CANNOT increase latency.” That’s not shouting to a human mind—it’s a signal to an LLM wading through millions of plausible paths that needs anchoring. People catch themselves doing it in code reviews, then have to consciously un-capitalize before a human actually reads it.

There’s a half-second pause before hitting enter on complex prompts. Not hesitation exactly. More like checking your pockets before leaving the house. Did you bring the key constraints? Did you preload the relevant context from memory? Did you forget the edge case that bit you last time? That pause costs nothing with code but reads as aloofness in conversation if you’re not careful.

Then there’s the formatting. People nest bullets four levels deep to represent hierarchical decomposition. They use code blocks as visual separators between context, task, and output spec. They format prompts with consistent headers—CONTEXT:, TASK:, CONSTRAINTS:, ACCEPTANCE:—because agents parse these patterns reliably. Looking back at old chat logs from early 2025, prompts were a wall of undifferentiated text. Now they look like structured documents. The formatting itself becomes a technique.

It’s not a solitary phenomenon. Every heavy AI collaborator has a private dialect. One friend ends every significant prompt with “Ask me clarifying questions before proceeding.” Another prefixes every task spec with a shorthand memory invocation—a literal tag at the top of each session that fires a preference-check before anything else runs. These aren’t universal best practices. They’re relationship artifacts—negotiated agreements between a human and their particular AI.

What Actually Sticks

The typing habits are just the surface.

Precision decomposition. People learn to break high-level features into steps before even prompting. This often clicks during a migration spec that keeps ballooning—you can’t write a clean prompt for it. Turns out you couldn’t write a clean prompt because you hadn’t actually defined what done looked like. The two problems had been one problem all along. Once you can state the acceptance criteria in one sentence, the prompt takes two minutes and the feature is scoped. That habit then shows up in ticket writing, architecture docs, and pretty much everything.

Strategic information gating. Early on, over-sharing is common. Asking an AI to help refactor session management while dumping the entire auth stack, a security audit, three months of user complaints, and the roadmap produces a beautiful, comprehensive system that touches seven files no one asked to touch. The prompt asked for a focused fix. It heard an invitation to over-deliver. Then Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe becomes relevant. Context gets deliberately starved at each phase. Broad EPIC for planning, narrow Task for execution. The same principle applies directly to briefing teammates: spoiling the ending kills ownership, context-dumping kills focus.

Audience awareness. “When AI Reads Your Work” made the case that your docs, comments, emails, and persistent chat history are all infrastructure for agents that parse with perfect recall but zero intuition. Rewriting three sentences at the top of a README can stop an agent from hallucinating a deployment model. First-attempt task completions stop needing clarification rounds. The README didn’t change for the humans on the team—they already knew how the system shipped. It changed for the agent. Turns out the discipline of writing for an AI audience—explicit constraints, decision rationale, behavioral contracts in tests—is just the discipline of writing well. Humans benefit too.

Metacognition. Prompting reveals assumptions faster than almost anything else. Asking an agent to design a distributed rate-limiting strategy and watching it propose Redis, when Redis had never been mentioned, surfaces that the asker had been mentally assuming Redis for two years without ever examining that assumption. The agent didn’t introduce a bias—it reflected one back. After enough of these cycles, people develop a sixth sense for when their own framing is steering things toward a local optimum. They start asking better questions of themselves before they ask them of the agent. It carries over to code reviews, hiring interviews, and any conversation where an unstated assumption has a cost.

All four reward a closer look.

Why This Changes How You Work With People

So you’ve built a weird way of talking to your AI. Why does anyone else care?

Because these habits, when used carefully, make you better at working with humans too. Socratic questioning—“What does success look like? What’s non-negotiable? Walk me through the failure mode you’re worried about.”—is just good engineering leadership with a technical origin story. Structured decomposition is how you keep a feature from sprawling before anyone writes a line of code. Strategic info gating stops you from accidentally robbing a teammate of the problem they needed to solve themselves.

It goes deeper than that. Prompt engineering—underneath all the jargon—is really just the discipline of saying what you mean before someone else has to guess. Mind The Product put it well: the skills that make a good prompt—stating the outcome, surfacing assumptions, knowing your audience—are the same things you need to run a good technical brief, a design critique, or a planning meeting.1 The same muscle that produces a crisp 20-line prompt for My AI produces a crisp one-paragraph scope that a team of six can actually run with.

Your argument game improves too. Every prompt iteration is low-stakes debate against a tireless, literal opponent. You learn to spot the assumption you didn’t state, the framing that invites over-optimism, the request that lacks a stop condition.

Those reflexes carry into code reviews, design critiques, and cross-functional meetings. The data shows that argumentation, context-setting, and the ability to reconcile conflicting mental models are rising in economic value precisely because AI makes raw synthesis cheap and framing is what’s scarce.

Even meetings get better, weirdly. The pause before hitting send on a complex prompt—surface missing context, name the actual decision, check for scope creep—is the same habit as writing a tight agenda with a declared outcome. The CONTEXT / TASK / CONSTRAINTS / ACCEPTANCE formatting ritual becomes the pre-read template that people actually read before showing up. In both cases the gap isn’t intelligence—it’s shared understanding. AI agents demonstrate this discipline. Humans appreciate it too.

Practical Takeaways

Cultivate the good habits deliberately. Keep a private .ai-relationship.md where you document the prompt patterns, formatting rituals, and dialect you’ve worked out with your agent. Revisit it monthly. What still works? What have you outgrown? It’s the living record of how your working relationship with AI is evolving.

Run translation experiments. Once a week, take a prompt habit and try it in a human context—code review comment, architecture decision record, planning meeting, stakeholder brief. Watch what lands, what confuses, what needs softening. ALL CAPS becomes bold. Acceptance criteria become a single clear question.

Practice audience-switching. Write the same technical requirement three ways: once for a human teammate, once for an agent with zero prior context, once for a colleague who’s also a heavy AI user. Notice how the versions diverge. That exercise trains the instinct that “when AI reads your work” and “when humans read your work” are now different literacy contexts that have to coexist.

Update your role instructions after a good session. When a prompt pattern or phrasing clicks—really clicks, produces exactly the behavior you wanted—don’t let it live only in your memory. Codify it. Update your CRUSH.md, your AGENTS.md, your system prompt, whatever you use to configure your AI’s working mode. The mannerisms only compound if you write them down. A prompt dialect that lives in your head dies when the context window closes.

Anti-Patterns to Avoid

Don’t over-anthropomorphize your agent. It doesn’t care about your feelings, your deadlines, or your team’s morale. It’s a powerful, context-starved pattern-matcher. Gratitude is fine as a personal ritual; expecting loyalty or empathy is a fast path to disappointment.

Avoid sycophancy traps. If your agent agrees with everything you say without surfacing tradeoffs, your prompting style has trained it to be a yes-man. Build in explicit challenges: “Play devil’s advocate on this.” “What would a skeptical senior architect say?” The goal is to make disagreement cheap and frequent, not rare and career-threatening.

Don’t use the mannerisms on everyone. Not every conversation needs four levels of nested bullets and Socratic cross-examination. Read the room. The developer working at 11pm on a Friday doesn’t need a full context preamble. A colleague deciding between two approaches doesn’t need acceptance criteria formatted as a spec document.

Keep the dialect fluid. The prompt language you develop this month will feel awkward in six months. That’s fine—update it. The point isn’t to get precious about your AI shorthand; it’s to notice how your thinking is changing and keep what serves you.

My AI isn’t just a tool. It’s a mirror that reflects thinking style back at the speed of tokens. The habits built to work with it—precision, patience, audience awareness, knowing when to share and when not to—aren’t AI-specific skills. They’re just better human collaboration skills with a weird origin story.

None of it is mysterious once seen: prompt discipline becomes briefing discipline; iterating against sycophancy becomes comfort with dissent; context-window management becomes meeting hygiene. The research backs it: what’s genuinely scarce right now—when AI can synthesize anything on demand—is framing, argumentation, and knowing the audience.2 Those are exactly the muscles prompt work exercises. The effects on how you lead, brief, and collaborate aren’t accidental—they’re the byproduct of hours spent making a machine understand what you actually mean.
