About Me
I'm Tim Varley, a Principal Systems Engineer and Technical Lead with over 15 years of experience designing and building high-performance distributed systems. Based in Bensalem, PA (originally from Oxford, UK), I specialize in systems architecture, microservices, protocol engineering, and security — with a strong command of the infrastructure and DevOps disciplines needed to operate them at scale.
My core philosophy centers on AI-driven development and Agentic workflows. I believe in leveraging advanced AI tools to amplify the capabilities of small, focused teams, enabling them to deliver innovative, disruptive technology with full ownership and unprecedented velocity.
I currently serve as Technical Lead across two concurrent IoT platform engagements, responsible for systems architecture, infrastructure, and DevOps across two distinct companies simultaneously. I thrive in environments where performance optimization and reliability are mission-critical, having optimized system performance by 170% and managed systems serving millions of daily requests across distributed environments.
AI & Agentic Workflow
I am deeply committed to an AI-first approach. I utilize Agentic workflows for everything from code generation and refactoring to complex system architecture and documentation. By integrating AI agents into the development lifecycle, I maximize efficiency, reduce boilerplate, and focus human creativity on high-level problem-solving and architectural innovation.
Professional Journey & Achievements
My career spans from building ultra-low latency financial systems to architecting modern cloud-native IoT platforms and AI-driven solutions.
IoT Platform Engagements
Technical Lead (Concurrent) | 2016 – Present
I lead the technical strategy, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps for two separate IoT companies simultaneously:
- Energy Management Platform: Focused on power usage monitoring and optimization, utilizing SBC Edge devices managed via Balena fleet management.
- Environmental Optimization Platform: A pioneer in turf watering and resource usage optimization.
In this dual role, I:
- Infrastructure: Designed and deployed cloud-native architecture using Docker containers and microservices for both platforms.
- Automation: Implemented automated CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code practices to manage distinct environments efficiently.
- Scale: Managed distributed systems across AWS/cloud environments, ensuring high availability and robust monitoring with CloudWatch and Grafana.
- Security: Architected scalable Node.js APIs and established strict security practices, including network segmentation and secrets management.
Previous Highlights
- PromoExchange: As Lead Software Engineer, I architected a cloud-native platform in just four months, enabling significant cost reduction for clients through efficient resource utilization and automated deployments.
- ASI: As Enterprise Architect, I spearheaded a cloud migration that improved system performance by 170%, supporting 3M+ daily requests with 99.9% uptime for global deployments.
- Thomson Reuters: Developed ultra-low latency, mission-critical financial data delivery systems, implementing custom monitoring and network optimization for industry-leading performance.
Innovation & Recognition
- Inventor: Holder of US Patent 6,119,104 for a multi-channel banking solution.
- Recognition: My work was recognized with the Smithsonian Innovation Award and is archived in their permanent collection.
- Advisory: Served on Microsoft's investment banking advisory board (DNAfs), collaborating on financial standards.
Technical Expertise
I bring a diverse toolkit to every project, always focusing on the right tool for the job.
- AI & Automation: Agentic Workflows, LLM Integration, AI-Assisted Coding, Automated Refactoring.
- Cloud Infrastructure: AWS, Azure, GCP, Terraform (IaC), VPC/VNet, DNS, Load Balancing, Autoscaling, Disaster Recovery.
- Containers & DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes/Orchestration, Microservices, CI/CD Pipelines, GitOps.
